What:VR6 Front Spindles & Hubs
Why: The stock TDI spindles & hubs are an integrated cast unit, so can't really be modified. The caliper carriers rae cast into the hub itself, making removing or extending them impossible. The VR6 ones are modular.
The stock TDI brakes are little teeny, tiny things. They are adequate for a stock TDI, but look laughably small on 17" wheels, as well as being inadequate for a car with touble the torque and horsepower. There are several options, but the most expediant is the VR6 variety of spindles, hubs, calipers and carriers.
Getting the stock hubs off is a real pain in the ass if they are old. It required a torch and a lot of elbow grease. The new equipment goes right in fairly easily though, once you get the hubs off.
I replaced the VR6 caliper carriers with Audi TT caliper carriers, which bolt right up, but allow you to use 12.1" rotors.
What I would do differently: If I was doing it again today, I would probably go with a complete Audi TT front suspension setup. I would get the spindles/hubs/LCAs/etc... from an Audi TT instead of the VR6. The cost would be substantially more, though.
