What: VNT-17 (GT1749VB) Garret Turbo (Variable Nozzle Turbo)
Why: More power! What else? The VNT-17 Turbo will allow 22 PSI sustained boost, whereas the VNT-15 (GT1749V) only allows about 19 PSI sustained boost - and you're really pushing it with that.
What I would do differently: Nothing - it's not impossible to put a VNT-20, or other turbo on here... but to do it, it would requier a lot of custom work. The VNT-17 almost bolts right up, and provides quite a bit more air than the stock VNT-15.
The important specs on 15 vs the 17 are the larger diameter wheel. The 15 has a 1.3" (33mm) wheel, whereas the VNT-17 has a 1.435" (36.449mm) wheel. This also translates to a larger intake for the VNT-17, obviously. Couple the fact that you also remove and replace the stock VNT-15 air pipe with a larger, 2" tube, and the net result is a much freer flowing turbo than the 15.
Basically - all piping is custom work at this point. That is really the only way to go if you want to do it right and get the most out of your turbo.
Where:
Both tdiparts.com and Kerma TDI sell them.
You can buy the "installation kit" from either site, which will run $275.00 and $30 respectively. The more expensive kit contains the hose for attaching to the turbo. The VNT-17 has a snap type connector hose, whereas the VNT-15 users clamps. The snap type connector hoses are pretty leaky and not-so-good. The end of the turbo that has the clips on it ended up being cut off and a regular hose fitted onto it.
